Which of the graphs shown to the right could represent the position of a ball dropped from a second story window?

  • Make a table showing the position of the ball at one-second time intervals. What is its position at t=0? How far does the ball travel in the first second? in the next second? etc. Make up values for the position at different times and plot these points on a graph. Sketch a smooth curve through these points. Which of the given graphs is closest to your sketch? What other graphs might also apply? [hint]

  • Think about how the speed of the ball is changing as it falls, and how this would affect the average speed and distance traveled during (let's say) 1-second time intervals. [hint]
